Bullet train from Beijing to Shanghai in four hours Posted: 04 Jan 2011 10:28 PM PST At an average speed of 350 kilometers per hour, a new high-sped rail link between Shanghai and Beijing will open in mid-June according to the Ministry of Railways. This is a significant improvement over the 10-18 hours for a typical train trip between the cities. Although ticket prices have yet to be announced, many analysts believe a tickets will be priced to be competitive with the cost of air fare between Beijing and Shanghai. Those flights have a price of 1,200 yuan for an hour and half flight. While the length of rail lines between Shanghai and Beijing make up only 2 percent of the rail network, rail traffic between the two population centers handle about 10 percent of the nation’s passenger load and 7 percent of the cargo transported. So, cutting down the time between the two cities will help reduce railway congestion and aide in economic development. By the end of 2010, China had 8,358 kilometers of high-speed railways in service with 1,200 bullet trains in operation. By the end of 2011, the Railways Ministry plans to have another 5,000 kilometers of high-speed lines in service. |
