Godhra case – 11 warded capital punishment, 20 get life term Posted: 02 Mar 2011 01:00 AM PST The special court in Ahmedabad today, sentenced eleven people to death and twenty people to life imprisonment, in the historic case of Godhra train burning. Nine years back, an S6 coach of the Sabarmati Express was set ablaze on 27th February, which burnt 59 people alive. The court termed the case to be the rarest of the rare case, where 11 people were awarded capital punishment. Special Public Prosecutor, J M Panchal said that the death penalty will have to be first confirmed by the High Court. A total of 31 people were found guilty of conspiracy to attack the Sabarmati Express. On 22nd February, Judge PR Patel had acquitted 63 people, who were previously charged in the same conspiracy. The prime accused Maulvi Hussain Umarji, was also among those who were acquitted. The twenty people, who have given lifetime imprisonment, are also fined with Rs 17,300 each. Their term in jail will be calculated according to the number of years they have already spent in jail. |
Shivratri festival importance and celebrations Posted: 02 Mar 2011 12:57 AM PST The festival of Shivratri this year is celebrated on 2nd March 2011, which falls on the 13th or the 14th day in the month of Phalgun of the Hindu calendar. Shivratri is mostly celebrated in the northern part of India. According to the Hindu mythology, Lord Shiva on this day had performed 'Tandava' (dance of creation, destruction and preservation). People also believe that during the 'Samudra Manthan' which is the mythical churning of the ocean, a pot of poison had emerged. All the Gods and demons feared that it would destroy the world. When Lord Shiva was asked for help, he drank the poison and held it in his throat. Since then the day is celebrated, when Lord Shiva saved the world. On this day married women, pray for the well being of their husbands and sons. Devotees of Lord Shiva on this day chant 'Om Namah Shivaya', so that they get rid of all the sins. |
