Guru Poornima, a day to respect your teacher Posted: 14 Jul 2011 10:59 PM PDT The festival of Guru Poornima is mostly celebrated by the Hindus in India. It is the day when the guru or the teacher is offered respect and or prayers. The day usually falls on the full moon in the Ashadh month according to the Hindu calendar. Though the day may also be observed on the 5th of September, but Guru Poornima is an important day spiritually as well as philosophically. While explaining the importance of the day, a spiritual teacher from the Ramkrishna Math said that the word Guru is related to darkness as well as light. The teacher, who did not wish to be recognized said that in the word Guru, 'Gu' means darkness and 'Ru' means light. Thus a teacher is the person who leads us from the darkness to the light. Right from the time of infancy the mother helps the child to grow by providing him ample guidance, from how to talk and walk. Later on the various stages the child comes across several guidelines through the guru in the form of a teacher. |
