It is a well diversified 50 stock index accounting for 23 sectors of the economy. It is used for a variety of purposes such as benchmarking fund portfolios, index based derivatives and index funds. Nifty is owned and managed by India Index Services and Products Ltd. (IISL), which is a joint venture between NSE and CRISIL. Nifty has shaped up as the largest single financial product in India, with an ecosystem comprising: exchange traded funds (onshore and offshore), exchange-traded futures and options (at NSE in India and at SGX and CME abroad), other index funds and OTC derivatives (mostly offshore). | About Bank Fixed Deposits Posted: 20 Sep 2011 06:33 AM PDT In a Fixed Deposit Account, a certain sum of money is deposited in the bank for a specified time period with a fixed rate of interest. The rate of interest for Bank Fixed Deposits depends on the maturity period. It is higher in case of longer maturity period. Bank Fixed Deposits are also known as Term Deposits. The interest can be calculated quarterly, half-yearly, or annually, which varies from bank to bank. They are one the most common savings avenue, and account for a substantial portion of an average investor’s savings. Note: For senior citizen the rate of interest is 1% more then normal interest (In case of Bank FD). Advantages: - It is the safest investment and you can avail 75% to 90% loan against your FD (with 2% increase in interested rate) without many formalities. It can be repaid in period you desire.
- It is totally risk free provided FD is with nationalised bank or well repute bank.
Disadvantages: - Growth in your investment very low/slow.

| About Public Provident Fund (PPF) Posted: 20 Sep 2011 06:18 AM PDT The Public Provident Fund (PPF) is probably the most popular of all the tax-saving schemes. The PPF account may be opened at any branch of the State Bank of India (SBI) and its subsidiaries, a few branches of the other nationalised banks, and all head post offices. Salient Features of PPF : - The Public Provident Fund Scheme is a statutory scheme of the Central Government of India.
- The Scheme is for 15 years.
- The rate of interest is 8% compounded annually.
- The minimum deposit is 500/- and maximum is Rs. 70,000/- in a financial year.
One deposit with a minimum amount of Rs.500/- is mandatory in each financial year. - The deposit can be in lumpsum or in convenient installments, not more than 12 Installments in a year or two installments in a month subject to total deposit of Rs.70,000/-.
- It is not necessary to make a deposit in every month of the year. The amount of deposit can be varied to suit the convenience of the account holders.
- Account can be opened by an individual or a minor through the guardian.
Joint account is not permissible. - No age is prescribed for opening a PPF account.
- The PPF scheme is operated through Post Office and Nationalized banks.
- PPF account can be opened either in Post Office or in a Bank.
- Deposits in PPF qualify for rebate under section 80-C of Income Tax Act.
- The interest on deposits is totally tax free.
- Deposits are exempt from wealth tax.
- The balance amount in PPF in PPF account is not subject to attachment under any order or decree of court in respect of any debt or liability.
