| Safi Airways Suffering from Losses Due to bad management and Corruption Posted: 26 Mar 2010 10:03 PM PDT Story Submitted By : James Barryman – Just as he arrived on his uneventful flight from Dubai to Kabul on one late afternoon, a man sitting in business class of B737-300 belonging to one of the private airlines in Afghanistan looked nervous as he stepped out of the aircraft he is greeted by a tall middle age Afghan man who whispered something in his ears. His nervousness increased many folds and he walked to the ramp side looking dazed and confused. He is the owner and chairman of Safi Airways, Mr. Abdul Rahim Safi known to his friends as 'Rahim Jan". He is informed by his General Manager that the fuel provider refuses to provide fuel on credit and demanding cash payment due to unpaid debt and nonpayment of fuel for several days. Dawi Oil is one of the major Jet fuel suppliers in Afghanistan and they had enough with "Rahim Jan" because he is promising them share in the airline and promise to make all the payments to be made on time for several months now. Abdul Rahim Safi woes does not end there he owes money to the airport authority in Kabul and not to mention several hundred thousand dollars of non-payment for ground handling agent part of national Afghan airlines Ariana. The biggest mistake he made was to hire an incompetent and failed CEO Mr. Tilmann Gabriel who was known for his bad management and poor financial discipline. The classic mistake was that Tilmann Gabriel recruited several fellow Germans to assist him in running the airline. Unfortunately, one of them was Mr. Werner Borchert a former LTU pilot who was kicked out of each airline he worked for poor performance and questionable practices. He convinced Mr. Abdul Rahim Safi to give him an irrevocable mandate to lease any aircraft without his consent and approval in writing. Werner Borchert leased the wrong aircraft for the fleet that was the wrong choice for a fledgling young airline with millions of dollars in debt from the National Bank of Pakistan, Azizi Bank, several underworld "Shady Afghan businessmen with unknown income sources". Airbus A340-300 was not the right fit for an airline that is operating two classic B737-300 and one twenty years plus old B767-200ER with ongoing maintenance issues. The lease agreement was done with the front company and estimated USD 1.5 Million was paid in commissions. Not to mention a most expensive maintenance contract awarded in the history of Lufthansa Technik with Safi Airways literally putting Safi's aircraft in complete Lufthansa Technik maintenance control. With mounting ongoing operating losses on Kabul-Frankfurt route due to poor load and cargo lift and loss making Kabul-Kuwait route with hardly 30 percent labour traffic with lowest ticket prices there was no chance for profitability. All the profit sustained from the Kabul-Dubai sector was used to cover high operational cost in Dubai. The management enjoying high Dubai lifestyle with waterfront ultra chic Palm apartments and not to mention high salaries and expat benefits including expensive German vehicles increased pressure on Mr. Abdul Rahim Safi to secure more loans from all "available sources in Afghanistan".
