RBI Credit Policy Market Bhavishya CNBC TV18 Report

Posted: 20 Apr 2010 03:46 AM PDT

Manish Sonthalia, equity head at Motilal Oswal, said, "As far as hike in CRR, reverse repo and repo rate is concerned, the market already has well discounted on this front. We expect the hike to be around 50 basis points across all rates. Goldman Sachs issue will have its negative impact on the market this week."

The central bank said that with the improving growth outlook, monetary and fiscal exit measures have started, but warned that an ill-planned exit from monetary and fiscal stimulus would mar growth.

The hike in CRR, which will come into effect from April 24, will absorb Rs 12,500-crore excess cash from the banking system. Banks have already indicated that they may not pass on the increased cost to the borrowers immediately as liquidity still remains sufficient in the system.

"I think the primary driver for RBI's policy will remain what it can do with inflation rate and how quickly it can bring it down, especially non food inflation and I think as long as that keeps sticking up and that does not show signs of coming down soon, I think that will be the driver for RBIs policy," says JP Morgan Chief Economist Jahangir Aziz.

The Reserve Bank of India will shortly issue Rs.50/- denomination banknotes. Except for the change in the inset letter, the design of these notes to be issued now is similar in all respects to the banknotes in Mahatma Gandhi Series – 2005, with additional / new security features issued on August 24, 2005. All banknotes in the denomination of Rs.50/- issued by the Bank in the past will continue to be legal tender.

Index heavyweight Reliance was trading at Rs 1,066.25 up 0.4% from its previous close of Rs 1,061.95. Hindustan Lever was trading at Rs 225.00 up 0.11% from its previous close of Rs 224.75.

Happy 420 Nation Weed Day Rally

Posted: 20 Apr 2010 03:33 AM PDT

Happy National Weed Day
Happy 420 and the safe rally we all had So much fun and enjoyed the rally and go for the go.
420, 4:20 or 4/20 refers to consumption of cannabis and, by extension, a way to identify oneself with cannabis drug subculture.

The term originated from a group of teenagers at San Rafael High School in San Rafael, California, United States in 1971. The teens would meet after school at 4:20 p.m. to smoke marijuana at the Louis Pasteur statue.

According to an April 2009 article on the The Huffington Post, the group called itself the Waldos because its members hung out by a wall after school. Writer Ryan Grim, citing interviews with anonymous Waldos, claims that the group met by the statue at 4:20 p.m. to begin a search for a crop of abandoned cannabis growing near Point Reyes that they had heard about. They never found the stash, Grim writes, but smoked plenty of marijuana while looking for it.

Whatever the real story is, 420 has been an important part of the marijuana culture since the 1970's. The significance of 420 has been kept underground and is mostly known only among marijuana smokers. Many non-smokers aren't aware of the symbolism when they see someone wearing a T-shirt or baseball cap that says 420 across the front.

When the 420 icon is somehow discreetly worked into a mainstream product like a film, marijuana users take notice. The film Pulp Fiction is rumored to have had all clocks throughout the movie set to 4:20. Marijuana smokers familiar with the symbol picked up on it—most people, however, did not.

While some marijuana smokers are using 420 as a code that enables them to openly speak about marijuana in front of parents or teachers. 420 has been to some, a sacred symbol for nearly 30 years.

Simply put, 420 is a symbol of cannabis and its culture. Today, April 20th events are international, and 4:20 pm has become sort of a world wide "burn time".

He pauses and thinks, hands on his side. "I don't know the real origin. I know myths and rumors," he says. "I'm really confused about the first time I heard it. It was like a police code for smoking in progress or something. What's the real story?"

Depending on who you ask, or their state of inebriation, there are as many varieties of answers as strains of medical bud in California. It's the number of active chemicals in marijuana. It's teatime in Holland. It has something to do with Hitler's birthday. It's those numbers in that Bob Dylan song multiplied.

The origin of the term 420, celebrated around the world by pot smokers every April 20th, has long been obscured by the clouded memories of the folks who made it a phenomenon.

According to Steven Hager, editor of High Times, the term 420 originated at San Rafael High School in 1971 when a group of about 12 students calling themselves the Waldos would meet after class at about 4:20 in the afternoon to smoke marijuana near the campus statue of Louis Pasteur.

A quote from one of the Waldos in the magazine states, "We did discover we could talk about getting high in front of our parents without them knowing by using the phrase 420."

According to some pot smokers, there are about 420 active chemicals in marijuana, but this number goes up and down depending on which plant is used.

Another version suggests 420 originated from Adolf Hitler's birthday. The Nazi leader was born on April 20, 1889. Pot smokers have turned this infamous day into a celebration of peace and freedom.

The Waldos never envisioned that pot smokers the world over would celebrate each April 20th as a result of their foray into the Point Reyes forest. The day has managed to become something of a national holiday in the face of official condemnation. This year's celebration will be no different. Officials at the University of Colorado at Boulder and University of California, Santa Cruz, which boast two of the biggest smoke outs, are pushing back. "As another April 20 approaches, we are faced with concerns from students, parents, alumni, Regents, and community members about a repeat of last year's 4/20 'event,'" wrote Boulder's chancellor in a letter to students. "On April 20, 2009, we hope that you will choose not to participate in unlawful activity that debases the reputation of your University and degree, and will encourage your fellow Buffs to act with pride and remember who they really are."

But the Cheshire cat is out of the bag. Students and locals will show up at round four, light up at 4:20 and be gone shortly thereafter. No bands, no speakers, no chants. Just a bunch of people getting together and getting stoned.

The code often creeps into popular culture and mainstream settings. All of the clocks in Pulp Fiction, for instance, are set to 4:20. In 2003, when the California legislature codified the medical marijuana law voters had approved, the bill was named SB420.

A large celebration is held every year on the University of Colorado's Boulder campus, with attendance reaching more than 10,000 in 2008. It has been estimated that in 2009 the crowd surpassed the 10,000 attendee mark that was set in 2008. This would make CU Boulder's celebration of the hopeful legalization of marijuana one of the largest such celebrations in the United States. University police have tried various methods to prevent the gathering, including photographing students participating in the event, but the crowd has grown every year.[10] The university and police have taken a more hands-off approach since 2006, emphasizing event safety over possession citations. Recent growth of the medical marijuana industry in Colorado is expected to add momentum to future events.

On April 15, 2009, the Office of the Chancellor sent an e-mail to all CU students regarding the 2009 celebration of 4/20 stating that the event would debase "the reputation of your university and degree." The CU student newspaper disagreed with the Chancellor's analysis.

Gray Powell Apple lost the Next iPhone

Posted: 20 Apr 2010 03:25 AM PDT

Gray Powell
Gizmodo has just revealed that the unlucky chap who lost his iPhone prototype is Gray Powell. Turns out Gray also has a MySpace page in addition to the Facebook page mentioned in the article.

The MySpace page certainly has some interesting things to note. For one he's rocking a Microsoft Zune theme

Gizmodo's Jason Chen and Jesus Diaz reported what's new: "Front-facing video chat camera." They documented what's changed: "The back is entirely flat, made of either glass (more likely) or ceramic or shiny plastic in order for the cell signal to poke through." They solidified their place in Apple history and Steve Jobs' long-term memory. The story received 6,485 diggs, and was retwittered 27, 096 times. Colossal.

It was followed by another story: How Apple lost the Next iPhone. And, more specifically, who lost the next iPhone. Enter Gray Powell.

The 27-year-old Powell—a North Carolina State University 2006 graduate and talented amateur photographer—is an Apple Software Engineer working on the iPhone Baseband Software, the little program that enables the iPhone to make calls.

On the night of March 18, he was enjoying the fine imported ales at Gourmet Haus Staudt, a nice German beer garden in Redwood City, California. He was happy. The place was great. The beer was excellent. "I underestimated how good German beer is," he typed into the next-generation iPhone he was testing on the field, cleverly disguised as an iPhone 3GS. It was his last Facebook update from the secret iPhone. It was the last time he ever saw the iPhone, right before he abandoned it on bar stool, leaving to go home.
via Gizmodo

Nick Denton, who has been running Gawker Media network, wherein Gizmodo is part, disclosed that he paid $5,000 for the handset, and tweeted afterwards unapologetically "we'll do anything for a story." Their featured gadget has caught attention to a lot of people especially those Apple fanatics. It was later then found out that the real owner of the latest iPhone is Gray Powell, an Apple Software Engineer. The picture shown is courtesy of his friend Jack Daniels. After the time that he lost the iPhone in the bar last March 18, he then posted this statement in his facebook wall "I underestimated how good German beer is."

Amazingly, Powell is still working in Apple at the moment despite the fact that he was involved in a huge technological leak that has ever happened. Apple has been known to be a very secretive gadget company especially when it comes to its latest gadgets.

"deliberately pulling the wool over the rest of the worlds eyes"

Are you nuts? We are doing the best we can. We need enough units to have a responsible and great launch.

Seems Gray Powell bounces. And instead of ruining Steve Jobs' week he may have saved it. I don't know how the Facebook Page came to be, if it was created by Gray or (god forbid) a brilliant Apple marketing move. Either way, a PR disaster is now a quirky and personable mistake. Through Gray Powell Apple can be human, Steve Jobs can be kind and forgiving. It wasn't so long ago the interwebs was on high-alert, in single-minded support as Steve Jobs battled cancer. But public opinion is like that volcano over in Iceland. Once it starts spewing, it takes a while for the ash cloud to lift. What lesson do we learn? Things happen. Sometimes people across the country wait in line all night long to be the first to buy a brand new sight-unseen device. And, once in a while, a next-gen iPhone gets left on a bar stool after too many beers. There but for the grace of Jobs…

You go, Gray.

Chris Henry Is Dead In Truck Accident Report

Posted: 20 Apr 2010 03:17 AM PDT

Chris Henry
Chris Henry (May 17, 1983 – December 17, 2009) was an American football wide receiver who played five seasons in the National Football League for the Cincinnati Bengals. He played college football at West Virginia and was drafted by the Bengals in the third round of the 2005 NFL Draft.
Henry was involved in a string of legal troubles during his professional career, which include several arrests for such offenses as driving under the influence, marijuana possession, assault, and criminal damage. He was suspended for the first four games of the 2008 season.

Indeed, his multiple arrests during a five-year NFL career were among the factors prompting the league to toughen its personal conduct policy.

But to hear his teammates tell it -- even the team's owner -- the Bengals receiver was determined to leave behind his troubled past and move ahead toward a bright future.

Tragically, his efforts were cut short.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg police said the 26-year-old Henry died early Thursday, less than 18 hours after he fell off the back of a pickup truck on a curvy residential street about eight miles northwest of downtown Charlotte.

The cause of death was not immediately released.

Neighbor Lee Hardy told WLWT-TV and The Cincinnati Enquirer that he was working in his yard when the truck left the driveway. Hardy said Henry was yelling that he needed to talk to the woman behind the wheel.

"He said, 'If you take off, I'm going to jump off the truck and kill myself,'" Hardy told the newspaper.

The first 911 tape was from an unidentified woman who said she was following a yellow pickup truck.

"It's got a black man on it with no shirt on, and he's got his arm in a cast and black pants on," she told a dispatcher. "He's beating on the back of this truck window. ... I don't know if he's trying to break in or something. It just looks crazy. It's a girl driving it."

He was ejected from a game and suspended for another at West Virginia, where former coach Rich Rodriguez told Henry that he was an embarrassment to himself and the program. His reputation was already costing him - the Bengals were the only NFL team to bring him in for a pre-draft visit in 2005.

They found that his demeanor didn't match his reputation. Henry was shy and spoke in a quiet voice. They warned him that he had to stay in control if he was going to stay in the NFL. Then, they picked him in the third round.

In a sense, it was already a second chance.

"I'm worth the chance," Henry said, when he showed up the following weekend for a rookie minicamp. "I'm just happy they took me."

He was 26 when he lost his life this morning. Just 26 years old. For as many headlines as he had made, it seemed like he should be older. The fact was, though, that he was still a very young man. He was just entering his football prime, and considering his natural gifts and the signs he had been showing before being put on injured reserve this year, he could have gone on to have a great career.

That's the tragedy here. If things had continued to go the way he and his teammates said they were headed, Chris Henry could have one day stood in front of the world as an example that no matter what you've done in the past, your future can be better. He could have told the at-risk youth of the world, "Yes, it can be difficult to change the direction of your life, but it can be done, and you have the power to do it. I did it, and you can do it."
What a great thing that could've been. Sooner or later, we're all going to let somebody down. But life is about how you learn from your mistakes and how you use the experience to make yourself a better, stronger person.

"The domestic situation continued between the operator and Mr. Henry," according to a police statement. Henry "came out of the back of the vehicle" about half a mile from the house, it said.

Henry was a native of Belle Chasse, Louisiana, according to the Bengals' Web site. He and his fiancée, Loleini Tonga, had planned to be married in March, the team said. Henry leaves three children -- two sons and a daughter, the team said.

Tonga's family lives in Charlotte. Bengals coach Marvin Lewis said he told players of Henry's death, speaking to them a couple of times Thursday. He declined to tell reporters what was said.
Video: Bengals react to player's death

"That's between us," Lewis said.

Other Sources Says -

Charlotte-Mecklenburg police have said that a domestic dispute lead to the fatal injuries Henry sustained when he fell off a moving pickup driven by Loleini Tonga Wednesday.

Tonga's neighbor, Lee Hardy, was perched on a 15-foot ladder cutting back some trees when he saw the yellow pickup "zooming" up the Tongas' gravel driveway just a few yards away. Hardy said a shirtless black man clung to the top and side of the truck while standing in the bed, begging her to stop the vehicle.

"He was banging on the top, on the doors, screaming at the lady, 'We need to talk,'" Hardy said. "He said, 'If you take off, I'm going to jump off the truck and kill myself.'"

Hardy said she stopped, hesitating at the end of the driveway, and took off.

Soon afterward, authorities received two calls alerting them of the incident, which ended just a half-mile from Tonga's family home. Police say she stopped immediately after he fell from the truck.

n the early morning of Monday September 25, 2006 Bengals linebacker Odell Thurman was pulled over for a DUI.
The truck Thurman was driving belonged to Rookie Reggie McNeal, who was a passenger along with Chris Henry. Neither McNeal nor Chris Henry were charged with any wrongdoing by authorities, however, Bengals Head Coach Marvin Lewis benched Henry for the Bengals loss against the New England Patriots. On October 6, 2006 The NFL suspended Henry for two games for violating the league's personal conduct and substance abuse policies. NFL policies forbid Henry from taking part in practices, however, he was allowed to attend any team meetings. Henry missed the Bengals' Oct. 15 game at Tampa Bay Buccaneers and their Oct. 22 game against the Carolina Panthers.

On January 25, 2007, Henry pleaded guilty to charges of providing alcohol to minors, an incident that occurred at a hotel in the spring on 2006. He was sentenced to 90 days in jail, with all but two of those days being suspended.

Hekla Volcano The Gateway To Hell

Posted: 20 Apr 2010 03:04 AM PDT

Hekla Vocano
Hekla is a stratovolcano located in the south of Iceland with a height of 1,491 metres (4,892 ft). Hekla is Iceland's most active volcano; over 20 eruptions have occurred in and around the volcano since 874. During the Middle Ages, Icelanders called the volcano the "Gateway to Hell."
Hekla is part of a volcanic ridge, 40 kilometres (25 mi) long. However, the most active part of this ridge, a fissure about 5.5 km (3.4 mi) long named Heklugjá, is considered to be the volcano Hekla proper. Hekla looks rather like an overturned boat, with its keel being in fact a series of craters, two of which are generally the most active.

Many believe that the next Hekla eruption is imminent, and the recent Iceland volcano eruption in Eyjafjallajoekull has added to those fears.

But rumors of a Hekla volcano eruption today are false.

Twitter was filled with Hekla eruption rumors after an MSNBC Twitter feed @BreakingNews tweeted, "Large plume indicates second Icelandic volcano, Hekla, has begun erupting - watch live http://bit.ly/9iNfKE."

On Monday, the Icelandic Meteorological Office that the Hekla volcano which is in southern part of Iceland had not erupted.

Live footage from the Icelandic National Broadcasting Service initially appeared to show images from the Hekla volcano with a huge plume of smoke rising from it. Later, the service said the camera was accidentally pointed at the Eyjafjallajökull glacier – which continues to erupt and has caused major air travel disruptions across Europe.

An official with the Icelandic Meteorological Office in Reykjavik said he was aware of media reports, but said they were not accurate. "I'm sitting here in the middle of the Icelandic Met Office and we've seen nothing to indicate an eruption," he said.

Hekla Volcano erupting in Iceland was the subject of an explosion of rumors after an errant Twitter feed sounded the alarm that the ninth most dangerous volcano in Europe had awakened. The MSNBC Twitter feed was a false alarm. However, the next time Hekla Volcano news erupts it could make the economic fallout of the Eyjafjallajokull volcano eruption in Iceland last week seem like a small personal loan.

Hekla Volcano news surfaced today as it was classified as one of Europe's most dangerous volcanoes in a new study by the Willis Research Network (WRN). The study ranks European volcanoes with the potential to disrupt populations of greater than 10,000. Hekla Volcano ranked ninth in the study. Italy's Mount Vesuvius was number one. If Mount Vesuvius were to explode to its full potential, 8,000 people could be killed and 13,000 seriously injured. Economic losses could add up to more than $24 billion.

Meanwhile, the ash cloud over Europe from the Eyjafjallajokull volcano, a pipsqueak compared to the volcanoes on the WRN list, continues to wreak havoc with air travel worldwide. The New York Times cited it as worst peacetime air travel disruption ever. The nearly weeklong shutdown of airports stranded thousands and cost airlines hundreds of millions of dollars in money now. It's a good thing Hekla Volcano erupting was nothing but Twitter noise.

Early on Sunday morning (the 21st of March) eruption started at Fimmvorduhals, an area between Katla volcano and Eyjafjallajokull glacier and a popular hiking trail. Fear remains that the eruption at Fimmvorduhals might trigger a much larger eruption in Katla volcano. The eruption at Fimmvorduhals has now stopped but a new eruption in Gígjokull glacier started on April 14th 2010.

Hemlock The British Plant Poison

Posted: 20 Apr 2010 02:52 AM PDT

Hemlock
Hemlock, several poisonous plants in the Apiaceae family (formerly Umbelliferae):
Hemlock (Conium), two species, one formerly used as a method of execution
Water Hemlock (Cicuta)
Hemlock water dropwort (Oenanthe crocata)
Hemlock (Tsuga), a genus of coniferous trees

Of all the plants traditionally associated with European witchcraft, the one you are most likely to come across in Britain is hemlock, or Conium maculatum to give it its botanical name. It is also likely that you will have passed by without giving it a second glance, which is not surprising because unless you know what to look for, the distinctive features which differentiate this from the rest of the vast family of Umbelliferae, it will not look significantly different from the hedge parsley, cow parsley and other more familiar members of the family you probably don't take much notice of either.

Description and habitat

Let us start, then, with a description of what you need to look for. Hemlock can grow to be as much as 6 to 10 ft tall, although more usually it is 3 to 5 feet tall. Like all members of the Umbellferae, its white flowerheads resemble those of parsnips, carrots, angelica and water hemlock, while the bright green leaves are deeply-cut, even feathery and delicate. It has a fleshy, white taproot. All plant parts are poisonous, with the seeds containing the highest concentration of poison. The conium alkaloids are volatile and can even cause toxic reactions when inhaled.

It takes the descriptor maculatum from its most distinctive feature - a deep or dark red, almost port-wine coloured, mottling on the lower half of the stem. This varies somewhat from a regular, neatly spotted effect to one which can leave the lowest part almost entirely red, gradually becoming more "spotty" further up. In any event, the mottling generally disappears about half way up the stem. The stem is perfectly smooth, unlike most of the other umbelliferae, which have vertically ribbed stems. It has a disagreeable "mouse-piss" smell which hangs around the plants on a hot day and is extremely pronounced when the leaves are crushed between the hands. These pointers, along with the unusual delicacy of the leaves, are the ones which will allow you to tell hemlock apart from its cousins.

Research scientists using molecular genetics have recently determined that several distinct populations of HWA occur in Asia and western North America and we now know that HWA populations found in the East originated from southern Japan. In their native range, these populations of HWA cause little damage to the hemlock trees they feed on as natural enemies and possible tree resistance has evolved with this insect pest.

In the absence of these natural control elements in eastern North America, this introduced insect pest attacks both eastern (Canadian) and Carolina hemlock which are often damaged and killed within a few years of becoming infested. HWA is now established from northeastern Georgia to southeastern Maine and as far west as eastern Kentucky and Tennessee.
