Manmohan Singh began talks with Obama including nuclear terrorism and David Headley Posted: 11 Apr 2010 11:20 AM PDT Washington, April 11 (IANS) India’s Prime Minister Manmohan Singh Sunday began talks with US President Barack Obama that are expected to focus on nuclear terrorism, India’s request for access to David Coleman Headley, a key plotter of the Mumbai attacks in the US custody, and Pakistan-origin terrorism. The talks are being held in Blair House, the presidential guest house across the street from White House, on the eve of the two-day Nuclear Security Summit, an ambitious initiative of Obama that aims at securing the world from loose bomb-making materials. |
Bharatiya Janata Party Sunday Demanded an apology from Germany Posted: 11 Apr 2010 11:17 AM PDT New Delhi, April 11 (IANS) Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Sunday demanded an apology from Germany for the “undiplomatic” remarks made by a German parliamentary delegation about Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi during a recent visit to the state. A party delegation will also meet the German ambassador Monday. The delegation will be led by BJP vice president Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi, the party said in a late Sunday night message to the media. The party announced it is organising a protest outside the German embassy in New Delhi Monday. BJP leader Vijay Jolly, also the joint convenor of the party’s foreign cell, termed the remarks a “foreign intervention in India’s internal affairs”. “Describing Modi as a ‘dictator’ is intolerable. Tarnishing the image of a democratically elected chief minister by visiting German officials is unacceptable. This is undiplomatic and unfair to the Indian cause,” Jolly said. “The single-day visit to Ahmedabad city, meeting Gujarat Congress leaders Shakti Singh Gohil and former MP Madhusudan Mistry and commenting that ‘Christian conversion activity was becoming difficult under the new religious freedom law enacted by Gujarat government’ is an alarming, mischievous act and comment by the visiting German MPs,” Jolly added. |
Shahid Kapoor growing beard for ‘Mausam’ Posted: 11 Apr 2010 11:06 AM PDT Mumbai, April 11(IANS) Actor Shahid Kapoor, who held a clean shaved chocolate boy image until director Vishal Bharadwaj’s “Kaminey”, is yet again donning a new look, wearing a beard for his father Pankaj Kapoor’s next film “Mausam” where he plays a role of an air force pilot. “My father told me to grow a beard so I am doing it. I am going to shoot ‘Mausam’ in three weeks from now. So we are still trying different things so I won’t really comment to say that this is my look for ‘Mausam’. This is one of the looks that has been considered. But it’s for sure there will two to three different looks in ‘Mausam’,” Shahid said. The actor who has two films – “Paathshaala” and “Baadmaash Company” – releasing in a row, wishes to experience flying fighter planes to understand his character in “Mausam”. “I am trying to learn flying fighter planes. I am playing the role of an air force officer in my father’s film, so there will be certain amount of exposure that I am trying to gain. But there are lots of permission that need to be taken and I also need to start shooting in three weeks … but yes I am trying to go to some of the air bases and if that is possible and authorities really allow me, then I would really love to go for that because it would really help me understand my character,” he said. |
Polish President’s ill Mother Unaware of his Death Posted: 11 Apr 2010 11:01 AM PDT Warsaw, April 11 (IANS) Eighty-three-year-old Jadwiga Kaczynska is still unaware of the horrific tragedy that caused the death of one of her twin sons, Poland’s President Lech Kaczynski, media reports said Sunday. Jadwiga Kaczynska is in a serious health condition, and doctors have recommended that she should not be told yet about the horrific crash near Smolensk in Russia in which Lech Kaczynski perished together with his wife and the entire high-ranking Polish delegation to the Katyn Massacre remembrance. On Sunday, the body of Lech Kaczynski was brought from Smolensk to Warsaw for a memorial service in the Presidential Palace. The body of his wife, Maria Kaczynska, however, has not been transported to Poland together with that of her husband as it had not been identified yet. |
EU Flags at half-mast for Polish President Posted: 11 Apr 2010 10:59 AM PDT Brussels, April 11 (DPA) The flags at the European Union’s headquarters flew at half-mast Sunday in honour of Poland’s president and over 90 other top officials, who died in an air crash. The crash outside the Russian city of Smolensk Saturday sent shockwaves across the EU. Poland joined the bloc in 2004, and President Lech Kaczynski represented it at a string of EU summits. The right-wing president was a controversial figure in Brussels, noted for his aggressive rhetoric and occasional undiplomatic outbursts. But his death alongside a host of elite Polish political and military figures, as they were about commemorate the 70th anniversary of the Soviet massacre of Poland’s inter-war leaders in the forest of Katyn, was widely mourned. The three presidents of the EU – European Parliament chief Jerzy Buzek, European Commission head Jose Manuel Barroso and the leader of the council of EU member states, Herman Van Rompuy – all sent messages of sympathy to Poland on Saturday. |
Hilary Swank Gives Air-Lift to BoyFriend Posted: 11 Apr 2010 10:19 AM PDT London, April 11 (IANS) American actress Hilary Swank, who loves doing dare-devil stunts, surprised her boyfriend by giving him a lift during one of her flying lessons. The 35-year-old actress, who recently portrayed celebrated aviator Amelia Earhart in “Amelia”, took a detour during her training for her pilot’s license, cancelled partner and agent John Campisi’s flight and took her plane to pick him up instead, reports contactmusic.com. “I absolutely love flying. I picked up my boyfriend from a meeting in Las Vegas. I said to my instructor, ‘Can we pick my boyfriend up?’ and he said, ‘Sure.’ So we flew to Vegas and showed up at the airport. John said, ‘You cancelled my flight and I’m getting in that plane?’ And I’m like, ‘You’d better – we flew all this way to get you!’,” she said. Swank says she wasn’t frightened by her lessons and loves trying out new and “exhilarating” dare-devil stunts. “Not many things make me nervous. Flying, skydiving and bungee jumping are exhilarating, a reminder that you’re alive,” she said. |
Manmohan, Gilani to Meet Obama, but no Indo-Pak Talks Posted: 11 Apr 2010 10:11 AM PDT Washington, April 11 (IANS) In a sign of the continuing deadlock in their bilateral ties, the leaders of India and Pakistan are set to avoid a bilateral meeting here on the sidelines of the Nuclear Security Summit, dimming prospects for a thaw at a South Asia summit in Bhutan later this month. Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and his Pakistani counterpart Yousaf Raza Gilani will be meeting US President Barack Obama separately at Blair House, the presidential guest house across the street from White House, Sunday afternoon, but both sides have ruled out a bilateral meeting. The US, which backs the resumption of dialogue between nuclear-armed rivals but has maintained a hands-off approach, was keen for a meeting between the two leaders, but the Indian side was not keen on a meeting at this stage. This is the second time in four months the leaders of India and Pakistan have avoided a bilateral meeting on the sidelines of a multilateral summit. India’s External Affairs Minister S.M. Krishna and his Pakistani counterpart Shah Mehmood Qureshi avoided a bilateral meeting on the sidelines of the Commonwealth summit in Trinidadian capital in November last year. The decision of both sides not to have bilateral talks has dampened prospects of a breakthrough at the expected meeting between Manmohan Singh and Gilani on the sidelines of April 28-29 South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) summit in the Bhutanese capital. Foreign secretaries of India and Pakistan met in New Delhi Feb 25, but the meeting ended on a tentative note with just polite noises about staying in touch. New Delhi has made it clear that Pakistan needs to show action on ground on 10 dossiers given to Islamabad linking Pakistan-based militants to various terror attacks in India before it can think of resuming the composite dialogue that stalled after 26/11 attacks. |
All Parties should Fight Maoists Unitedly, Says Yechury Posted: 11 Apr 2010 10:09 AM PDT Kolkata, April 11 (IANS) Political leaders cutting across party lines should unite in the fight against the Maoist guerillas, Communist Party Of India-Marxist (CPI-M) politburo member Sitaram Yechury said here Sunday. “Political parties should keep aside their vested political interests and must unite in the fight against the Maoist menace. It is not about a person or a leader to resign from a post. We want a united fight against the Maoists,” said Yechury while addressing mediapersons in Kolkata. Yechury questioned the legitimacy of the political alliance between the Trinamool Congress and the Congress party in the upcoming elections to the Kolkata Municipal Corporation and 82 other civic bodies across the state when the two parties differed on important issues like the women’s reservation bill and the anti-Maoist operations. “Trinamool Congress and Congress should come clear on their differences on the Women’s Bill and anti-Maoist operations. Else, wise people will think it’s only an electoral alliance against the ruling Left Front in West Bengal,” said Yechury. |
‘Godman’ Creates Bomb Scare on Khajuraho Flight Posted: 11 Apr 2010 09:54 AM PDT Lucknow, April 11 (IANS) A self-styled ‘godman’ was arrested Sunday for allegedly threatening to blow up a Khajuraho-bound Jet Airways flight from Delhi after he got into a scuffle with a foreigner, police said. The threat eventually turned out to be a hoax the ‘godman’ played. According to the Varanasi police, Vishwamitra was on board a Khajuraho bound Jet Airways flight from Delhi. While the flight was between Delhi and its first stopover, Varanasi, the self-styled ‘godman’ allegedly acted “funny” with a woman passenger from a foreign country, who objected to his behaviour. A heated argument ensued between the woman and Vishwamitra, following which the airplane’s crew intervened. Vishwamitra then threatened to blow up the aircraft. “I have planted a bomb on the aircraft and if you dare do anything against me, I will blow it up,” he said. The threat created panic among the 30 passengers on board. By then, the plane landed in Varanasi, where the airlines staff had already informed the police, who immediately got the passengers disembarked. “Even after the ‘godman’ was taken into custody, he continued to stick to his threat, following which the plane was searched and it was only after a nearly six-hour detention that they discovered the hoax,” police said. The flight eventually left for Khajuraho around 6.30 p.m. and instead of returning via its scheduled route of Varanasi, it was taken back to Delhi from Khajuraho, the airline officials said. |
