Eight killed in Iraq Suicide Attacks

Posted: 12 Apr 2010 11:05 AM PDT

Baghdad, April 12 (DPA) Two attacks carried out by suicide bombers targeting Iraqi security forces left dozens dead and injured in different areas of the country, security sources said Monday.

Sources told the German Press Agency dpa that three civilians were killed and 20 injured when a suicide bomber drove an explosives-laden car into an Iraqi police patrol in the northern city of Mosul.

Mosul, one of Iraq’s most ethnically diverse cities, has suffered nearly daily attacks despite heavy security measures.

In a separate attack, a suicide bomber drove a small bus loaded with explosives into an Iraqi army convoy in the town of Abu Ghraib, just west of Baghdad.

Witnesses told the German Press Agency dpa that a man drove a small Kia brand bus into an Iraqi army patrol in the center of Abu Ghraib, resulting in a “massive explosion”.

Four soldiers and one civilian were reported dead, in addition to the suicide bomber. Thirteen soldiers and two civilians were left injured by the explosion.

Earlier Monday, security sources had told dpa that seven individuals with links to Al Qaeda had been arrested in the northern city of Kirkuk.

“Seven members of the so-called Islamic State of Iraq were arrested during a search and raid operation by joint Iraqi-US forces in al-Huweija district and villages nearby,” said Fatah al-Khafaji, head of the al-Huweija police station.

Orissa continues to reel under heat wave

Nuclear summit warms up Washington DC Monday

Posted: 12 Apr 2010 10:12 AM PDT

Washington, April 12 (IANS) It’s cherry blossom season in the American capital as US President Barack Obama’s pet project, the 47-nation Nuclear Security Summit, opens here Monday amid high hopes of keeping terrorists away from loose bomb-making materials in the world.

The riot of pink and white blooms surrounding the Tidal Basin, a gift of 3,000 cherry trees from the Japanese in 1912, on the eve of the summit contrasts with the weighty issues of nuclear security that the 46 world leaders will discuss with Obama for the next two days.

The summit is the largest gathering of world leaders called by an American president since the iconic Franklin D. Roosevelt organised the 1945 meeting in San Francisco that gave birth to the United Nations.

Tragically, Roosevelt died two weeks before the session opened, but the 48-year-old Obama has time on his side to see his dream, unveiled in Prague a year ago to rid the world of nuclear weapons, turn real.

The summit will open at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center Monday with an official welcome and dinner by Obama for visiting world leaders and culminate in a joint communique Tuesday that will spell out a specific plan to secure bomb-usable materials within four years.

On the eve of the summit, Obama Sunday described the possibility of a terrorist organisation obtaining a nuclear weapon, “the single biggest threat to US security, both short-term, medium-term and long-term”.

Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh is among the world leaders invited for the summit that includes the major, minor and aspiring nuclear powers. Iran and North Korea have been excluded for their defiant violations of their Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty obligations.

Pakistan’s Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani is also in the American capital with a rising chorus of media reports highlighting Islamabad’s dubious record in proliferation and the potential of the Pakistan-Afghanistan region turning into a hub of nuclear terrorism.

“Nowhere is that truer than Pakistan, where two Taliban insurgencies and Al Qaeda coexist with the world’s fastest-growing nuclear arsenal,” says a report in the New York Times.

The spotlight on Pakistan’s proliferation record is good news for India as Manmohan Singh braces to highlight the issue of clandestine proliferation in his intervention at the summit Monday. India is also keen to set up a nuclear security centre for protecting atomic materials.

In his 50-minute talks Sunday with Manmohan Singh at Blair House, the presidential guest house, Obama appreciated India’s contributions to the preparations for the summit.

Manmohan Singh congratulated Obama on his initiative in convening this summit and underlined that India was an important stakeholder in this global endeavour.

Pakistan-origin proliferation and activities of A.Q. Khan network, run by founder of Pakistan’s nuclear programme, are not officially on the summit’s agenda, but the media reports are full of these.

Instead of being country-specific, Obama has decided to set more doable targets of securing in four years all loose nuclear bomb-making materials, including highly enriched uranium, in the world. The summit will focus on specific national and international commitments towards achieving this goal.

“I am concerned about nuclear security all around the world, not just in Pakistan but everywhere,” Obama said ahead of the summit. “We anticipate a communique that spells out very clearly, here’s how we’re going to achieve locking down all the nuclear materials over the next four years, with very specific steps in order to assure that.”

Poland President Death : Death Seems To Be A Russian Conspiracy

Posted: 12 Apr 2010 10:10 AM PDT

Poland President

Poland President

The demise of Poland president Lech Kaczynski in western Russia in a plane is a clear proof that we all puppets and God is puppeteer who is making us dance to his tune. We all come in this mortal world with his consent with some motive and we have to leave this world as per his decision. He was very famous among everyone in his nationals. So thousands of polish people came out to pay him their tribute.  On this tragic moment all the eyes in front of the palace got wet.

As per the information there were 97 people in the plane and they too lost their lives on the spot.  Level of name and fame earned by him was beyond the imagination of everyone.

Speaker of the lower chamber of the Polish parliament and acting president

Bronislaw Komorowski said that the entire nation has got united on his death for honoring Kaczynski. On his sudden death we all are shocked.

People paid tribute to their president and all those who lost their lives in this plane crash. Everybody did in his own way. It is a serious loss.

Fashion designer Ewa Robaczewski said that she is shattered at his death and this jolt can not be dictated in words.

Kaczynski was on his way to the forests of Katyn to commemorate the poles who were murdered in Katyn of soutern Russia by Stalin in 1940 in which more than 22000 polish police officers lost their lives.

Now the greatest president of Poland is no more now and he has perished in front of merciless death. But this Poland air crash has forced every Poland native to doubt that this may be Russian conspiracy.

‘Mehr’ for Ayesha Rs.500, for Sania Rs.61 lakh

Posted: 12 Apr 2010 09:47 AM PDT

Hyderabad, April 12 (IANS) The two figures are not even comparable. Pakistani cricketer paid a paltry Rs.500 as ‘mehr‘ for his first wife Ayesha Siddiqui but paid a whopping Rs.61 lakh for his second wife Indian tennis star Sania Mirza.

The ‘nikahnama’ signed by Shoaib while marrying Ayesha alias Maha Siddiqui in 2002, shows 500 Pakistani rupee as the ‘mehr’ (the gift given by the bridegroom to the bride at the time of marriage).

The former Pakistani skipper paid Rs.61 lakh as ‘mehr’ to Sania, whom he married here Monday.

Qazi Najmuddin Hussain, who completed the nikah formalities, said that the ‘mehr’ was fixed at Rs.61 lakh in cash.

Mehr, a prerequisite for a Muslim marriage, can be in the form of cash, gold or other valuables and it is aimed at providing some security to the wife in the event of divorce or widowhood. The bridegroom pays the ‘mehr’ which he can afford.

Shoaib is believed to have written the ‘mehr’ amount of Rs.500 just to complete the ‘nikah’ formality over phone.

The cricketer, who claimed that he married Ayesha presuming her to be the girl whose photographs he received, divorced her last week. He also paid Rs.15,000 to Ayesha as maintenance for three months as per Islamic shariat.
