Mumbai trains head towards normal after motormen end strike

Mumbai local trains are heading towards their normal schedules.

motormen and Home Minister RR Patil, had a meeting.

A committee will be formed to decide on the demands of the motormen by June 15, 2010.

The decision comes at the end of a harrowing Tuesday for Mumbai with quiet offices, empty train stations, jam-packed roads.

General Managers of the Western and Railway lines appealed to motormen “Please return to work” at a press conference at 4.30 pm.

Eighty of the trains on the Central and Western lines were cancelled through the day.

Between them, the two lines usually run 3300 trains on a normal day for more than 60 lakh commuters.

Whether to apply ESMA (Essential Services Maintenance Act) remained a delicate issue. The Act means that any government employee who does not return to work can be arrested. The central government sanctioned the enforcement of ESMA, but Maharashtra Chief Minister Ashok Chavan said it would be “the last option.”

In Parliament, the Railways Minister Mamata Banerjee came under severe criticism for the strike. What made matters worse for her was that she wasn’t present to take questions from angry Maharashtra MPs who joined forces across party-lines to ask what was being done to help commuters.

The Maharashtra government took the striking motormen to court. The Bombay High court is considering the case, but the judge has slammed the government for forcing motormen to put in overtime. Not only is this exploitative, said the judge, but it also endangers commuter safety. (Read: Mumbai train strike leaves several offices empty)

Offices in Mumbai reported up to 90% absenteeism.

But those Mumbaikars who had to get to work had a tough time braving crowded roads and not enough public transport. The government had organized buses at most major stations, but there weren’t enough, said commuters. Without trains to get to work, taxi drivers also chose to stay home. With cabs in short supply, the government made an exception, allowing taxis to accommodate more than three passengers. (More trouble for Mumbai, Meru cabs on strike)

The Chief Minister had said that all college exams in the city would be postponed if the situation does improve by Tuesday evening.

Twenty motormen have been fired; another 170 have been detained for protesting at Chattrapati Shivaji Terminus (CST). (Read: 170 striking motormen taken into custody)

And despite holding the city to ransom, they seemed to enjoy the sympathy of Mumbai. Commuters who spoke to NDTV in different parts of the city agreed that they should be granted the better pay and facilities that they’re demanding. (Watch: Mumbaikars wait for resolution at stations)

With the debate over the indefinite strike by railway motormen refusing to die down, the Speaker of the Lok Sabha Meira Kumar was forced to adjourn proceedings till 5.30 p.m. on Tuesday.

While, Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs V Narayanasamy said a statement would be made in the House by 6 p.m., the opposition demanded a statement by Railway Minister Mamata Banerjee.

Earlier, Lok Sabha was adjourned twice-once at 12 p.m. and second time at 2 pm on the issue.

Earlier, right away after completion of obituary reference, Shiv Sena members trooped into the well flashing placards ‘Mumbai comes to a grinding halt’ and sought to raise the issue of railway motormen strike.

AIADMK members also stormed into the well waving copies of a newspaper that carried reports on the controversy surrounding 2G spectrum bids.

With members unrelenting, the Speaker asked Home Minister P Chidambaram, who was replying to a question, to take his seat as nothing could be heard amid the din and adjourned the proceedings till noon.

DMK sources have ruled out the possibility of Raja resigning.

Sources said Raja has emerged as the Dalit face of the DMK and enjoys a good rapport with Karunanidhi.

Though Raja is tangled in two major allegations-the spectrum allotment — and his alleged telephone call to a Madras High Court judge for a favourable order Karunanidhi has remained soft on him. (ANI)

Meiyung Chang is Indian Idol 3 finalist and he is about to debut his acting career in upcoming movie Badmaash Company with Shahid Kapoor.

The Badmaash Company movie is produced by Yash Raj Films and actor Parmeet Sethi's first venture as a movie director.

The Badmaash Company movie also stars actress Anushka Sharma.

Meiyung Chang got fame not only with his singing talent but also because of his online – offline chemistry with his co-participant Monali Thakur. The singer turned actor Meiyung Chang has an added reason to be thankful for Indian idol.

Meiyung Chang found his sweetheart who was also part of Indian Idol 2. He says frankly, “Monali Thakur is my girlfriend. I’m happy that she is also a part of my first film. She is giving the voice-over for Anushka Sharma.”

Monali Thakur grew to eminence from the Pritam Chakraborty's “Zara Zara Touch Me” song in Race movie. So it is assumed that there was a backing hand of Pritam in Meiyung Chang's casting.

Adobe launches Creative Suite 5 Master Collection. Adobe systems has declared the launch of new Adobe Creative Suite 5 Master Collection which will enable deploying content across different media, including print, internet, and mobile devices.

New Creative Suite 5 Master Collection: The design and development software offers more than 250 new features including full-version upgrades of creative tools. The New Creative suit features integration with online content and digital marketing measurement and optimization capabilities. It also offers workflow improvements for designers and developers.

The Adobe CS5 allows a designer to create interactive and digital content without the need to write a code. Until now the designer used to visualize and pass on the idea to the developer. The new suit simplifies this process by power of content creation and expression on various media option to the users.

The Adobe Flash Catalyst in the CS5 is capable of converting content for different type of media without the need for writing a code. The designers get more opportunities to make decisions.

“From print to the mobile device, from script to screen, Adobe CS5 optimises content creation and publishing,” said Sandeep Mehrotra, country head sales, India. He further said that the CS% will bring benefits to publishers, designers and marketers by improving their media content.

“CS5 was a highly anticipated release for the Indian market, home to a vibrant creative culture with the largest film industry in the world, one of the most awarded advertising industries, and including an ever growing population of animation, design, music, architecture, gaming, publishing and outsourcing industries,” he added.
