Power supply is normal in Haryana Posted: 09 Jul 2010 12:13 AM PDT Chandigarh, July 9 – Reacting to the news items appeared in a section of Press regarding disruption of power supply in district Ambala and Kurukshetra after heavy rain fall and floods on July 7, a spokesman for the Haryana Power Utilities said here today that all the substations of the Haryana Vidyut Prasaran Nigam and the Uttar Haryana Bijli Vitran Nigam had started functioning and the power supply position was normal. Giving details, he said that the heavy rain fall affected seventeen substations of Haryana Power Utilities. There was three to six feet of rain water in switch yards and control rooms of the substations. The Utilities had been forced to switch off the power supply to avoid electrical accidents. The Utilities had made the best possible efforts to restore the supply by pumping out the rain water and bringing the system back to normal. 132 KV substation Ismailabad and 66 KV substations at Sadhopur, Kesri and Nalvi were re-commissioned on July 7 by making strenuous efforts. Managing Director, HVPN, Mrs Jyoti Arora and Director, Mr V.B. Chaudhary visited the affected sites personally and monitored the restoration process. The spokesman further stated that the power supply through 66 KV substation Barnala and Shahbad was restored on July 8. Power Utilities associated with the BBMB authorities to restore power supply in 220 KV substation, BBMB Dhulkote and the system was made functional on July 8 morning. The spokesman further stated that the rain water has been pumped out from 33 KV substations also in district Kurukshetra. As many as ten substations had been affected by the heavy rain fall. Director, A.K. Jain was deputed for monitoring the arrangements of dewatering from the substations premises. The electricity supply in all the substations has been restored. He also said that the officers and staff of Haryana Power Utilities had worked hard round the clock to restore the system back to normalcy. The officers of the level of Director, Chief Engineer and Superintending Engineer had been assigned the responsibility of ensuring power supply as early as possible so that the consumers are least affected. The spokesman said that the worst affected area was Power Colony, Dhulkote where the water entered the switch yard, substation, official complex, work shop and stores office and residences of staff. The Utilities would carry out the maintenance of the buildings. The affected employees, who had shifted to other places, would be able to back to their houses after completion of the work, he added

Ahlawat has ordered the district officers to remain alert and not to leave the district headquarters. Mr Ahlawat said that all arrangements have been made by the district administration to control floods and the district administration was fully prepared to meet any eventuality. He urged the people to cooperate with the administration. Control rooms have been set up at the level of headquarters and tehsil for providing round-the-clock services. Besides this, Police Patrolling Parties have been deputed for the flood prone areas. The phone numbers of the district headquarters control room are 0184-2267271 and 2261077 and Police control room number is 0184-4091000. Besides this, control rooms have been set up at Indri and Assandh sub-division. He said that officers have been deputed for flood relief work who would keep a strict vigil on the situation and provide information to the district headquarters so that timely flood relief measures be taken. As many as 67 pumps were available for drainage of water including 30 of diesel and 37 electricity driven mobile pumps. These pumps could easily be shifted to any place for use. All the Patwaries and Nambardars of the district would be authorized to give information concerning flood.

Hansi-Bhutana Link Canal suffered breach due Posted: 08 Jul 2010 06:52 PM PDT Chandigarh – The Hansi-Bhutana Link Canal suffered breach due to excessive flow of water in Ghaggar river near Tatiyana and Kharal villages of Kaithal district in Haryana today. The third pillar of the Canal was damaged due to speedy flow of water in Ghaggar river in the area. While stating this today, Deputy Commissioner, Kaithal said that keeping in view the prevailing situation, the district Administration has launched rescue and relief operation. On the request of the Administration, the voluntary organizations have also come forward to deal with this exigency. Army had also been called to help the Kaithal district administration in rescue and relief operation as seven villages namely Tatiana, Khushal Majra, Baupur, Hemu Majra, Lalpur, Seo-Majra and Bhatian have flooded due to a breach on both sides at RD-52,000 BML Ghaggar at village Tatiana of Guhla Sub Division in the district in the mid-night of July 7. All this is leading to flooding the area of Kaithal district headquarter also. He said that flooding had affected a population of 5,000 of these villages. Ghaggar river was flowing above danger mark at Guhla Sub Division of the district. Munadi had been got done and Abadi had been moved to safe places. Non Governmental Organisations had also been asked to prepare dry ration for the flood affected people. Eatables have been provided to all the flood affected people and ropes, petromax and candles were being made available. A Tata-407 canter had been made available for every two villages to carry eatables and other necessary materials to the flood affected people. He said that teams of the doctors have also been dispatched to the flood affected villages. The officers of the Animal Husbandry and Dairying Department had also been asked to provide medicines in the villages to protect the livestock against water borne diseases.

Pahadia reviewed the steps taken by the state government Posted: 08 Jul 2010 06:51 PM PDT Chandigarh – The Haryana Governor Mr Jagannath Pahadia today reviewed the steps taken by the state government to mitigate the sufferings of the people caused by flood fury in the districts of Ambala, Kurukshetra and Kaithal. He also directed the Chief Secretary,Mrs Urvashi Gulati to keep him apprised regularly about the latest flood situation in the state. Governor was apprised about flood situation by Chief Secretary and Financial Commissioner and Principal Secretary Irrigation Mr S S Dhillon here today. The Governor Secertary Mr Mohinder Kumar was also present during the meeting. Mrs Gulati apprised the Governor that flood like situation which was prevailing mainly in three districts of the state was due to heavy rain and overflow in the catchment ares of Ghaggar, Markanda and Tangri. The torrential rain in district Ambala had also caused grim flood situation in Ambala city as well as Ambala Cantt areas. She acquinted the Governor that water from Ambala city could only be drained out in river Ghaggar and Tangri and so long the rivers were flowing high. As the river is flowing high, it would not be possible to drain out the water. The Chief Secretary maintained that district administration had made elaborate arrangements to provide food packets, water and medicines to the people. She revealed that a 100 member team of National Disaster Authority of India had arrived in these districts to provide prompt relief to the affected people. She said that 150 trains had been affected due to the flood situation. She said that eight villages of Guhla-Cheeka sub division had been marooned. The food packets and other items were being supplied by the religious and non-government organizations. She also apprised that medicines and Doctors teams had also been pressed into service and people had been advised to be vigilant from the water-borne diseases. Mrs Gulati told the Governor that teams of Veterinary Surgeons had also been sent in the affected areas and as many as 65 boats had been pressed into service to serve the affected people. Apart from this, 600 employees of Irrigartion department were also helping the district administration. She apprised that Haryana Chief Minister Mr Bhupinder Singh Hooda had also visited Kurukshetra and Ambala yesterday and took the stock of the situation with district administration and announced to provide a grant of Rs. two lakh each to the family member of deceased persons who were electrocuted in district Ambala. She said that Rs. One lakh each would be given to them from district Red Cross and Rs. Two lakh each on behalf of Haryana Government. While referring the heavy rain in Ambala, Kurukshetra and Kaithal districts, she maintained that 286 mm rain was recorded in the month of July as against 104 mm in during last July. Similarly, it was 206 mm rain in district Kurukshetra as against 45 mm and 96 mm in Kaithal as against 35 mm during last July. Financial Commissioner and Principal Secretary, Irrigation Mr S S Dhillon informed the Governor that the uncontrolled water from Punjab entered in SYL at RD KM zero in district Ambala. Initially this discharge was 2000 cusic and it had went on increasing continuously and had touched a mark of 5869 cusic and further it increased beyond 6000 cusic and left bank of SYL breached at RD 36.9 Km near Jyotisar. Army personnel have been called to arrest the water flowing out of breaches and entering into the nearby villages by putting sand bags and other materials. Mr Dhillon apprised the Governor that SYL at Amabla is running with 8000 cusic discharge at 7.45 p.m. on July 6 and every possible effort were being made to save the breach of the canal. He hoped that the breach would be plugged soon. He said that due to heavy rains in the ares adjoining Ambala and Shahbad, water had collected along National Highway No. 1 and National Highway No. 22 and it had also crossed the HN-22 from Golden Forest Complex to Baldev Nagar. He said that Tangri was still overflowing; a sheet of water from Punjab side had entered Ambala Cantt area and flooded the Railway station area thus disturbing the railway and road traffic. He said that efforts were on to restore the power supply in the affected areas so that people could be saved from the agony which caused due to the failure of power.

85.47 per cent polling recorded in the recently held elections of Panchayti Posted: 08 Jul 2010 06:49 PM PDT Chandigarh – An overall percentage of about 85.47 per cent polling has been recorded in the recently held elections of Panchayti Raj Institutions on July 6. The election was held for the offices of 13,367 Panches, 1,365 Sarpanches, 670 Member Panchayati Samitis and 130 Members Zila Parishads in the 31 blocks of 8 districts including Gurgaon, Hisar, Karnal, Panchkula, Panipat, Rohtak, Rewari and Yamuna Nagar. While stating this here today, State Election Commissioner, Haryana Mr. Dharam Vir said that the highest polling was 89.88 per cent in Yamuna Nagar and the lowest was 79.05 per cent in Karnal. About 85 per cent women voted as against 85.8 per cent men. In a few districts, the percentage of polling by women was more than that of men. He said that total 87.99 per cent votes were polled in district Gurgaon out of which 88 per cent were of males and 87.98 per cent were of females voters. In district Hisar, total 83.60 per cent of votes were polled out of which 86.63 percent were male voters and 79.81 were female voters. Similarly, a total of 79.05 per cent of votes were polled in district Karnal out of which 78.67 percent were male and 79.51 were female voters. In district Panchkula, total 86.25 per cent of votes were polled out of which 86.43 per cent were male and 86.03 were female voters whereas total 87.14 per cent of votes were polled in district Panipat out of which 87.00 per cent were male and 87.32 were female voters. He said that in district Rewari, a total of 87.27 per cent of votes were polled out of which 86.88 per cent were male and 87.71 were female voters whereas total 82.54 per cent of votes were polled in district Rohtak out of which 82.14 per cent were male and 83.04 were female voters. A total of 89.88 per cent of votes were polled in district Yamunanagar out of which 90.65 per cent were male and 88.96 were female voters. The State Election Commissioner also congratulated the voters of eight districts for their enthusiastic response despite rains.

Hooda reviewed the flood situation and rescue and relief operations Posted: 08 Jul 2010 06:46 PM PDT Chandigarh – Haryana Chief Minister, Mr Bhupinder Singh Hooda today reviewed the flood situation and rescue and relief operations being undertaken in the flood affected districts of Ambala, Kurukshetra and Kaithal. He himself is closely monitoring the situation and will again visit the flood affected areas tomorrow to see for himself the measures being taken to help the affected people. Earlier, in the day the Governor, Mr Jagannath Pahadia was apprised of the flood situation and the relief operations by the Chief Secretary, Mrs Urvashi Gulati and Financial Commissioner and Principal Secretary, Irrigation, Mr S.S. Dhillon. As a result of the flood fury five persons have so far lost their lives in the State. They included three deaths in district Ambala and two in district Kurukshetra. Also, six cattle heads are reported to be perished in Kurukshetra district. The Haryana Government has further intensified its rescue and relief operation in flood affected areas of the State. Ambala District A team of National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) is reaching Ambala today to assist district administration. Ambala is facing flood situation in urban as well as rural areas due to breach in Tangri and Ghaghar river coupled with heavy rainfall. So far Ambala has received 286 mm of rainfall and due to continuous rainfall in catchment area the flood situation remains same. The District Administration has requisitioned Army to assist it in flood relief activities. Army personnel have been deployed in affected areas and relief camps have also been organized. Drinking water and food packets have also been distributed. More boats have been sent from Chandigarh to the flood affected areas of Ambala. Boats have been deployed by both district and Army personnel to evacuate persons to the safer places. Kurukshetra District Due to breach of SYL canal and heavy rains, Thenesar, Pehowa, Shahabad tehsils and Ismailabad and Babain Sub tehsils are affected by the floods in Kurukshetra district. About one lakh acres of agriculture land of about 247 villages of the districts has been affected by flood water. Mainly paddy and maize crops grown area has been affected due to standing flood water. Flood has caused damages in residential area of 67 villages. District Administration has requisitioned Army for assisting it in flood relief measures and has also taken help of National Disaster Response Force team to mitigate the suffering of the affected people. Both National Disaster Response Force and District Administration are using boats to evacuate the affected persons to the safer places. The district administration has made arrangements to shift affected people to the local schools and Dharamshalas. Food packets and other relief material are also being arranged to the affected persons. Plugging of breach in the SYL canal is being taken up on the war footing. Kaithal District Due to breach of Ghaggar at Tatiana village of Guhla Sub Division on the midnight of July 7, as many as seven villages of Kaithal district have also been affected by floods. About 5000 people have been affected due to floods. National Disaster Response Force and army are assisting to mitigate the sufferings of the affected people. Teams of Doctors and Veterinary Doctors are visiting the affected areas and preventive measures are being taken to check the spread of water borne diseases.

Kurukshetra University intensified relief work to ease the sufferings of flood affected people Posted: 08 Jul 2010 06:42 PM PDT Chandigarh, July 8 – Kurukshetra University, Kurukshetra has intensified relief work to ease the sufferings of flood affected people around the university. From Wednesday onwards, university administration has supplied as many as 7000 food packets and water bottles to the affected people. Vice Chanceller of University Lt General (Retd) Dr DDS Sandhu has visited the flood afftected areas and ensured proper distribution of eatable items to the people. "We are ready to provide every possible help to the district administration and continuously in touch with them", VC said. He said that university would provide tempory residential facility to its serving and retired affected employees. For this purpose, it had been decided to accommodate affected families in the 35 houses lying vacant in the university premises.
