Peepli Live is much more than just a movie in Nepal. The sad story of a farmer contemplating suicide is actually coming alive in Nepal, where many villages are actually names 'Piple'. Many farmers there are stuck in this predicament. In Nepal, Peepli Live dilemma is also coming true in many ways. While Natha survived in the end, in Nepal Peepli live is turning into a fatal, alarming reality with two suicides shaking up the community. The trouble is Nepal has been in the plight of exploitative rulers and many failed governments. It also saw a 10 year civil war. With so much blood shed, these suicides are another sad truth of Nepal. The first suicide similar to the Peepli Live scenario occurred on August 13. A 35 year old woman whose husband left her with her two children committed suicide. She was unable to provide for the kids. She first jumped into the river. Later, she set herself on fire. In the second suicide, it was the son of a farmers' leader. The farmer had take part in an Eastern Nepal uprising. The youth killed himself. The Peepli Live real scenario happened with Shambhu Rajbanshi in Nepal’s tea garden district of Jhapa. It took place on Sunday after years of frustration. While media has encouraged Peepli Live as worth watching, the hidden message in the movie is relevant for Nepal. It is not just Indian farmers who are suffering but those in Nepal too. Farmers are in abject poverty, with no control over land and resources. Peepli live must propose a solution too. |

Pateti refers to the New Year's eve as per the Shenshai calendar followed by orthodox Parsis. New Year's day follows it and is called the 'Nowroz'. Many Parsis also call the New Year's day Pateti, thus eliminating the difference. What does the word Pareti mean? It originates from the word 'patet' which is the Middle Persian word meaning repentance. Thus, the significance of Pateti lies in thinking and introspecting about one's words and actions so as to repent the bad ones and move towards being a better human. This way, the new year can sink in on a positive note. Pateti comes in August as per the Gregorian calendar. However, it will change in the coming years because Shenshai calendar does not account for leap years. Celebrating Pateti: Pateti 2010 is marked with a lot of excitement. The pateti festival is celebrated with home decorations and special foods and fragrances. Usually, on the pateti festival, the door thresholds of homes are decorated with designs. They usually make a fish, with red powder used for marking the eye of the fish. Incense sticks called Agarbatis, are lit. Earlier sandalwood would be burned and then the person would walk around to fill the home with its fragrance but now sprinkling of sandalwood powder is practiced. On the Parsi New Year, sandalwood is sprinkled on coals put on the censer. Flowers are also used. Parsi New Year greetings and gifts include new clothes. Parsis bathe and visit temples in the morning, wearing these new clothes. Children are particularly excited about this part of Parsi new year festivity. Special food like traditional breakfast including Ravo made from suji (semolina), milk and sugar, and Sev – fried vermicelli is served. This is cooked in sugar syrup. It's a sweet dih garnished with silver.Other sweet eats can be suterfeni (fine vermicelli swirls) and jalebi. Pateti is something Parsis look forward to, it is no different for the Parsi new Year in 2010! |
‘Tees Maar Khan’ hot number gives muscle cramps to Katrina Kaif Posted: 18 Aug 2010 05:21 AM PDT Katrina Kaif has reportedly developed stomach cramps while shooting for her upcoming film Tees Maar Khan. The incident occurred when the actress was getting trained in belly dancing for a hot number in the movie called 'Sheela ki Jawani'. The film is directed by Farah Khan and the choreography too is done under her supervision. As per the sources, Katrina cried out loud as soon as she got the pains. Farah ran to her rescue but at first could not make out what had happened. She was initially unable to even speak and seemed to be in grave pain. It was after Katrina pointed at her stomach that Farah came to know the reason. The actress' muscle cramps happened after six days of training and this could appear quite surprising. But sources say there is nothing unusual as the dance form is too hard to learn. Meanwhile, Katrina denied the incident and added that she was perfectly all right. She said that the training is going on very well. However the actress revealed that there was some discomfort in her knees. Director Farah Khan however explained that the rehearsals were cancelled for the day as Katrina was not feeling well. She also hoped to resume work after the actress recovers in the next few days. She added that the actual shoot for the song will begin on August 21. Farah also complimented Katrina by saying that after the release of 'Tees Maar Khan', she would be as good as Shakira in belly dancing. |

Onam is a major festival in Kerala which marks the occasion of return of the benevolent and revered king Mahabali back from netherworld to review the welfare of the subjects he once ruled upon. Onam: the History The story goes that once upon a time very long ago, Kerala had a wise and judicious king in the Asura (Demon), Mahabali. He was not only a benevolent ruler but cared about his subjects with an almost fatherly devotion. His popularity though, earned the ire of the Gods who feared their thrones and evoked concern from the God mother, Aditi. Hence, Lord Vishnu seeking to remove Aditi's qualms took the avatar of Vamana (a Dwarf) and landed at a Yajna being held by the Demon king. Mahabali was impressed by Vamana and granted him a single wish ignoring the warning by his preceptor, Shukracharya. The king however, did not budge from his stance since he considered going back on a promise to be a great sin. Vamana wished only for 3 paces of Land. Once his simple enough wish was granted Lord Vishnu assumed his true form and in one step owned the sky and in the next he conquered the netherworld. Everyone was quivering in anticipation of Earth's destruction with the Lord's final step but the tender and loving king offered his head instead. He bore the brunt of the last step to be pushed way down to the netherworld but Lord Vishnu couldn't ignore the sacrifice and honesty which distinguished the great emperor Mahabali. He was allowed to visit his people once every year to ascertain their well-being and then depart in peace to his abode in the netherworld. Salman Khan keen on ‘Dabangg’ co-star Sonakshi Sinha’s acting career Posted: 18 Aug 2010 02:13 AM PDT Actor Salman Khan has started showing keen interest in the 'Dabangg' actress Sonakshi Sinha's acting career and seems quite pre-occupied with her assignments. However, this fact has not gone down well with his good friend Govinda who had hoped that Salman would help out his daughter Narmada in getting introduced to Bollywood. The close friendship between the two actors seems strained due to Salman's proximity to Sonakshi as Govinda feels that his daughter is getting ignored. Earlier Salman had promised Govinda to support him in launching Narmada's film career. He had even started the grooming process of Narmada. However, Salman now appears to have shifted his focus solely to Ms. Sinha. It all started post the shooting of his upcoming film 'Dabangg'. Salman and Govinda's frienship has been much talked about among the film circles till quite some time. It was Mr. Khan who recommended Govinda to be his co-star for the David Dhawan flick 'Partner' which boosted his sinking career. He had also been close to Salman's family and was often seen at his Galaxy Apartments in Bandra. But as of now, Govinda clearly seems upset with Salman's change of mind. Narmada is also reportedly as talented as Sonakshi, but Salman somehow appears to focus on veteran actor Shatrughan Sinha's daughter. |
