Leg Stretching Surgery Banned In China Posted: 10 Sep 2010 01:15 PM PDT This is weird. My wife, (5"0" tall and made in China) and an exchange student (4"11" and made in Japan) who is staying with us were talking about this yesterday. Girls in China head to Japan to have leg lenthening surgery because they don’t like being short. Now, the girls have another reason to go to Japan. China has banned leg-stretching surgery for cosmetic reasons only. The procedure involves breaking the patient’s legs (everybody say ouch!), then stretching them on a rack and putting pins in to make them legs longer. After that, the girls pour money into the pockets of the surgeons and their clinics. China now allows the procedure only in hospitals that do at least 400 orthopedic operations a year and offer post-surgery care and rehabilitation. Surgeons must be licensed orthopedic specialists with at least 5 years experience (perhaps working for the Chinese mafia has a finger buster?) The only apparently legitimate reason for such operations is when individuals have different limb lengths or a limb is damaged by injury, disease, tumor or infection. And, breaking a limb on purpose is NOT damaging? FWIW, and I fully admit to being partial. My petite wife is cute as a button. She just has a hard time finding clothes in American stores unless she visits the junior departments. But, then, what the hey. Clothes are cheaper there. Posted: 10 Sep 2010 09:13 AM PDT There must be a reason why I keep harping on this? Imagine buying a used car for $26K and then turning around and selling it for almost $30K. That’s what you can do if you can get your hands on a 2006 Prius. It used to be that when you drove a new car off the lot, the value went down to about half. A 2005 Prius, 2004 Prius and 2005 Honda Insight have also seen their value go UP! Let me see if I got this right. Buy a car, drive it for two years and then sell it for a profit?! Yep, that’s the way it is with these Japanese cars. Is America finally feeling the pinch, getting environmentally friendly, sliimming down (their cars at least)? Are the American car companies listening? Huh!? I said, are GM and Ford listening? Huh!? I guess not. Japan knows how to make cars. Japan knows what America needs. American car makers will be playing catch up for a long time. Dick Cheney told to Mind His Own Business Posted: 10 Sep 2010 05:13 AM PDT Dick Cheney warned President Putin that he has"unfairly and improperly restricted the rights of her people." The Russian people responded by going shopping. Russians are a resilient bunch of people. They are also a pessimistic lot. Most people in Russia still feel they are know better off, though they are consuming more. Inflation is 12% but economic growth is above that. Apartment prices are going up quicker than they are in Shanghai or New York. Of course, once it reaches the $1 million price tag, everything slows down, eh? Putin has a popularity rating of 70%, twice that of the US Prez. And Putin has the nickname "Teflon President." That’s important because five years ago no one in Russia knew what Teflon was. Things seem to be improving in Russia and the current Prez is enjoying the ride. But is economic stability the only thing that is important? Most people would say so. "If I can’t feed, clothe and house my family, what else matters?" Posted: 10 Sep 2010 01:12 AM PDT Much of China’s mineral reserves lie close to the surface, making it relatively easy and profitable to mine, even with very basic equipment. The international price of gold has skyrocketed since 2003. Additionally, China is mineral hungry…needed for a balanced diet. However, illegal mining leads to illegal dumping in rivers and lakes, damaging the environment and destroying land. From January of last year to June of this year, China dealt with as many as 70,000 illegal mining cases the China Daily reported. More than 90% of them involved mining without a license. 2,660 civil servants who held stakes in mines have been punished. China seems to be serious about cracking down on illegal mining despite its desperate need for such minerals as iron, coal, gold and such. Whether Chinese officials are successful or not remains to be seen. A lot of people, a lot of opportunity, leads to a lot of crime…of all sorts. Chinese Sportscaster Resigns Position Over Anti-Australia Rant Posted: 09 Sep 2010 05:07 PM PDT A Chinese Sportscaster for CCTV has resigned from Chinese Central Television (CCTV) because, he says, he needs a break. When Italy beat Australia in a last minute penalty kick, the Chinese dude cried out "Long live Italy" and "I don’t like Australia." Even after the game was over, the motor mouth kept on puttering…"I don’t care about the Australian team and don’t want to see Australia have good results in the World Cup." The sportscaster says his busy schedule – 200 live games a year, too many public appearances and writing a book – were the reason he was quitting. The newspapers are saying CCTV is unhappy with his foot in mouth slips. CCTV issued an apology for the sportscaster saying his comments were out of line. Wait till Australia and China meet up in the next soccer match. You can bet the Aussie coach will have a video of this guy to show his team so they can wonder what he is saying. "It doesn’t matter. He just hates us. Let’s beat the Chinese team!" Though, for some reason, I think the Aussie coach will be more explicit than I. America is not the only place where someone can lose a job for having their mouth speak when their brain is not engaged. What do you think? |
