Posted: 05 Sep 2010 06:33 AM PDT Suspended Pakistan bowlers Mohammad Asif and Mohammad Aamir names are withdrawn from next month's ICC awards in India, this move is quite a predicted one from the International Cricket council. Aamir was nominated in emerging player of the year category and Asif was nominated for test player. An ICC spokesman said on Friday that both players were withdrawn from the nominations list. Earlier on Thursday ICC suspended Salman Butt, Asif and Amir and trio questioned by police on police after being charged. Intentional bowling of no-balls in the fourth test against England at Lord's is centre staged last week through a British tabloid and later these allegations are proved up to a certain extent too. ICC is considering this entire issue and looking forward to take further actions against to this incident. Many famous cricketers and prominent personalities in cricket already responded on this context. |
3 Reasons for Transparency in Media Reporting Posted: 05 Sep 2010 04:27 AM PDT I am reminded of the girls who tried to steal all the newspapers that had unflattering pictures plastered on the front page. The end result was many more people saw the pix than might have had they just let things run its course. Transparency is necessary in media coverage. Blocking information just doesn't cut it. There are reasons: 1. Blocking negative incidents is just "too naive." In this day and age of the Internet, mobile phones, it is quite easy to spread info no matter how hard someone tries to prevent it. 2. Being open and free with information builds public trust rather than squelches it. 3. Enlisting the help of the media allows for a quicker response when something does go wrong. There is a new openness decree that was approved in January…. The country – China. But, will the country, the local government and central government really be open? The recent brick kiln slave scandal causes us to believe that not everybody believes in openness just yet.

Chinese ‘SuperBowl’ Station Earns $65 million in one Night Posted: 05 Sep 2010 12:26 AM PDT The China Central Television (CCTV) expected to earn more than 500 million yuan from commercials in one evening. A major part of the 1.3 billion Chinese watch the Spring Festival celebration on CCTV that has been airing for 20 years. The show ran from 8pm to midnight, about the length of a Superbowl game. The 8pm kick off ad went for 5.75 million yuan. The midnight ad went for a bid of 10 million yuan. My wife told me this was one of the things she looked forward to the most when going back to China this year for her first Lunar New Year celebration in more than 10 years. Her reaction was the same as many…boring…same…is that all? Sounds like some of the recent Superbowls, no? With the advent of "Super Girl" competitions and other more popular young actors, it may be just a matter of time before a provinical television station decides to take on the CCTV program. Now, THAT, would be an interesting battle. Maybe next year. How much would you pay to advertise something primetime in the most watched, yet boring, program?

China’s Richest Teacher Wants to Buy A Couple of Colleges Posted: 04 Sep 2010 04:25 PM PDT Am I in the wrong country or what? I thought China was a communist country and America was the land of capitalism. Yu Minhong is called the godfather of overseas studies in China. He owns New Oriental School (NOS) – an English language training school in China that helps students prepare for tests to enter American colleges. Thanks to a $110 million-US-Dollar IPO in New York last month he is now the richest teacher in China. NOS has 25 schools, 110 learning centers and employs 1,700 teachers in 24 cities. After or perhaps while he pays down NOS debt, Minhong has a wish list which includes a couple of colleges. My bet is he wants an assured destination for his many students, thus driving up the value of the education the Chinese receive at his school in China. No mystery there. And I thought I had to live a life of poverty and sacrifice when I decided to become a teacher. Oh, stupid me. What do you think? |
