Software Industry Reaches for $143 billion in Sales in 2010 Posted: 31 Oct 2010 11:36 AM PDT China's software industry is expected to reach 1.1 trillion yuan, ($143 billion) in 2010. Annual growth of 30% for the next three years will allow China's domestic growth to reach that target, according to the Eleventh Five-Year Plan for Software Industry Development. Exports are expected to grow by 28% each year to $12.5 billion in sales. By 2010, China is expected to have 15 major software firms. The Department of Economic Restructuring and Operations, says the government will encourage software firms to cooperate and form innovative unions to build an "innovative, home-grown technological system". Dr. Bojiang Yang – Brookings Institution Posted: 31 Oct 2010 07:36 AM PDT Dr. Bojiang Yang recently spoke on a panel at UC San Francisco about relations in North East Asia. Of the five speakers, Dr. Yang was the most difficult to follow. It had much to do with not being able to hear him. This is my polite way of saying that he mumbled a lot and his ability to express himself in English was challenged by a non-cooperating microphone among other things. Still – there is one point that struck me. Dr. Yang has been tasked with coming up a possible follow through scenarios IF the six party talks dealing with North Korean nuclear power crisis succeeds. I want to know how that will affect business in Korea, Japan, China, Russia and all of Asia. I didn’t know what to make of the IF…and, why not when. Still, I was struck by the planning for the eventuality, likely or not, of the success of the talks. His goal is to establish or encourage the establishment of Regional Security Mechanism in NorthEast Asia to allow for a peaceful nuclearization of North Korea. Wow! That’s a mouthful. And just what we need – another group of people for North Korea to ignore. In any event – planning is going on and suggestions for follow through on the successful completion of talks with North Korea can be directed to byang@brookings.edu. Chinese Fish Put on a Diet, Forced to Exercise So They Can Be Sent Home Posted: 31 Oct 2010 03:34 AM PDT Five Chinese fish, sturgeons to be exact, weigh in at more than a metric ton and are 3.6 meters long… a Yao Ming and a half. The plan is to transport the "pandas in the water" back to the Yangtze River where they were said to have originated some 140 million years. The fish are much fatter than the fat chance that their species is that old. Anyway…
The fish cannot be accomodated because of their size and the 20 hour journey is thought to be too much for them…so…diet and exercise…health checks…and training. I think the people who have been responsible for feeding these scaly pandas should be forced to go on a diet as well…and then made to sit in the transport tank for 20 hours before returning them. GM Displays Fuel Cell Car in Shanghai Posted: 30 Oct 2010 07:32 PM PDT GM has produced a hydrogen fuel cell-powered car called the Sequel. GM also knows that China has an appetite for advanced technology in its auto sector. So…the GM CEO took the Shanghai Mayor for a ride in GM’s fuel-cell car. The Sequel gets about 480km (300mi) to a tank. The car is not ready for mass production but it has whet the appetite of the Chinese. Perhaps if China were to put its huge resource of manpower to developing the vehicle…hmm.. It is estimated that hydrogen fuel cars will be ready for the mass market by 2020, about the time fossil fuels run out. The biggest obstacles are: 1. High cost – unless they are mass produced 2. short range – technicality 3. lack of fueling stations – nonsense. Someone/s will recognize this need and fill it 4. big oil – still has plenty of fossil fuels to burn before they turn their attention to this possibility, so what’s the rush? Let’s hope that hydrogen fuel is NOT always the hope of the future but sometime becomes the answer to the present. What do you think? |
