Time Top 100 – Helping India’s Poor One at a Time – Vikram Akula Posted: 13 Oct 2010 01:32 PM PDT I like this guy and I don’t even know him. Vikram Akula has made SKS India one of the fastest growing microlenders anywhere. SKS has loaned $52 million to 221,000 clients in the past 8 years. Do the math, this is hard work…especially when loans are typically around $116 and they are made to people who make less than $2/day. I love it. Somebody is trying to help the little people. And now Visa International wants to step in and help out. Well, sure after SKS did this much leg work. According to Time, someone very close to KnowMoreMedia has taken notice as well…David Schappell of Unitus – nonprofit venture capital firm devoted to microfinance. Now, if only Schappell can find someone willing to work as hard as Akula – one person at a time till they get to 200,000. I love this work ethic. |
Posted: 13 Oct 2010 09:31 AM PDT The Shanghai office of Microsoft China says their boss, Bill Gates, is coming for a visit on April 18-21. The Microsoft Corp boss will deliver keynote speeches at a Microsoft forum for Asian governmental leaders in Beijing and at a Boao Forum of Asia in Hainan Province. Also on his itinerary are visits to Tsinghua University and Peking University. CEO of the Greater China Region hopes his boss' visit will: 1. help improve relations between Microsoft, the government and industrial communities in China. 2. promote greater cooperation to advance innovation 3. allow more people to benefit from information technology. Indeed it is a powerful fellow when governments take note of his trips and speeches. What do you think of Bill Gates? Advice to Jane Fonda and me on our Christian walk Posted: 13 Oct 2010 05:30 AM PDT It’s never a good thing to hang on to old baggage, even you were right to begin with. It’s best to rebuild those old convictions based on the Bible. If a person’s thinking were right before, it’ll still be right after they become a Christian. But they’ll find those truths in Scripture, not by bringing them along. There is no need to hang on. It is better to become new. I am having a hard time seeing my keyboard. I have these huge poles in my eyes while I am trying to make and type out an observation and offer advice to someone, Jane Fonda, who has splinters in her eyes. Fonda, it seems, has come a long way. I have breakfast with a Vietnam war vet who reminds our group from time to time just where she started here journey from. Still, I welcome her to the family. A couple of things -
It is this kind of thinking that has caused so many divisions in the church. Folk do not want to read the Bible and change themselves. Rather they want to find like-minded folk who understand the Bible the way they want to and hang out with them. The result? Enough divisions in the church to make Jesus weep. The Bible is not that difficult to understand. (There are some hard parts, however.) What is hard is to mend our ways, to change our lives and conform to the Word. I encourage Fonda to change her ways, not just look for people she can agree with. Oh, and by all means Jane please encourage me to do the same.
2 Corinthians 5:17 applies – “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come!” Welcome to the family, Jane! Now let us encourage one another. 1 Thessalonians 5:11 |
India win Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2-0 Posted: 13 Oct 2010 03:04 AM PDT India beat Australia in the second Test match of the two-game series at Bangalore on Wednesday, October 12. India had to chase down a target of 207, which they did with ease thanks to a superb knock by Cheteshwar Pujara. Australia had led by 185 overnight and had three wickets remaining and would have hoped to set a target of at least 250. However, as it turned out, the pair of Zaheer Khan and S Sreesanth demolished the lower order for the addition of only 22 runs. India v Australia, 2nd Test score Chasing 207 for a win, India lost Sehwag early to Ben Hilfenhaus, but Murali Vijay and Pujara added 72 for the second wicket to bring the Indians back into the game.
